Dog Collage Portrait

I have been wanting to try a torn paper collage project for a while.  A little google research unearthed an artist that I found to be really inspiring.  It may have something to do with the fact that he specializes in dog collage portraits,  and I am a little bit crazy about my dog, so I thought this would be the perfect project!  The artist is Samuel Price and his website is  His website says that he accepts commissions and since both of my boys have a dog I am thinking ahead to Christmas and contacting him early.

So, to begin I just grabbed an old cardboard box and a Pottery Barn catalog.  I thought I would just try a small collage to see if I could even remotely do this.

Meet my little dog, Camellia, or “Cammie” as I call her.  I thought you might like to see the subject for comparison to the collage.

Here is my first attempt on the cardboard box!

I decided to try a little larger portrait after completing this one.  First I did a watercolor wash on my board to give a nice background color.  This time I picked up another catalog that had nice color in the photographs.

I thought she looked nice on the blue background!

Next attempts will be number one son’s black Labrador Retriever and number two son’s Jack Russell Terrier.

What do you think of my first attempt at torn paper collage?
