Welty on Wednesday: “The Whistle”

Taking the dogs outside right at bedtime the other night, the full moon captured me.

Perfectly round and glowing…

Full moon

I ran back in and switched my camera lens to capture the moment…

Full Moon

This must be exactly what Jason and Sara Morton saw from their farmhouse in the short story

“The Whistle”.

As Miss Welty wrote it: “Night fell.  The darkness was thin, like some sleazy dress that has been worn and worn for many winters and always lets the cold through to the bones.  Then the moon rose.”

“The moonlight covered eveything, and lay upon the darkest shape of all, the farmhouse where the lamp had just been blown out.”

Full Moon
