Delighted About Dahlias

I was delighted to discover dahlias blooming in my garden this morning.

Dahlia bloom

I had really all but given up on them…

You see, a couple of years ago some friends from Long Island sent me a selection of dahlia tubers and I read the instructions carefully and waited.  Almost nothing happened.  I had one plant that emerged from those ten tubers…

but that is it, only one plant, even last year, only one plant…

This year is a different story!

This is my rendition of Jack’s beanstalk I think…

I love the bud almost as much as the bloom (not really)…

well maybe…

and the miracle when the petals open one by one…

I really went out to cut a fresh bunch of zinnias today when I discovered those dahlias wide open.  I will miss the zinnias when they go…

Patience is required when growing plants from the more northern areas. Or so I have found.

love, love, LOVE this blog! so look forward to it each day! Daddy grew dahlias in our yard in v’burg, and they were magnificent–some grew seriously to 6 feet high, and a couple had blossoms the size of dinner plates. they were breathtaking, as are yours!

Marsha, I ordered dalias last winter and planted them in April. They started blooming in late June. Some have gotten so big that they are breaking of their own weight. I need tomato cages to support them, I think. A goodly portion of gin trash along with full sun and plentiful rain this summer made them happy.

Katie, mine are among my roses and they act as a natural stake! Yes, I can see where you would need cages for the taller ones – some of mine are as tall as I am. I would love to see yours!

  6. Gorgeous flowers and gorgeous pictures! I don’t have any of these lovelies in my garden, so I am pinning one so I can look at it when I want to and remind me to plant some next year! 🙂
