Friday Night Lights: A Movie Review

In our not so distant past,  Friday night lights were seen shining on the high school football field.

Fast forward a couple of years and, you guessed it,  Mr. Doctor and I took in the flickering Friday night lights of a local cinema.

Our choice last night was Woody Allen’s dramatic film, Blue Jasmine.

Blue Jasmine

Not  far into the film you realize that this is Woody Allen’s take on A Streetcar Named Desire.  Jasmine Francis is our present day Blanche DuBois with her economic meltdown and Jasmine’s sister’s boyfriend Chili steps up as the new age Stanley Kowalski.  The relationship between the two is fraught with the tension of her putting on airs and his cutting right through them.

In our first encounter with Jasmine she is impoverished, having lost most of her personal belongings to the government after her husband’s Ponzi scheme is uncovered and she shows up at the claustrophobic San Francisco apartment of her sister Ginger.

Out of the taxi come four Louis Vuitton suitcases (she could not sell those because they were monogrammed)…

Jasmine’s wardrobe is a red carpet worthy runway of all the best – Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Fendi.  Her shoes are Roger Vivier and her handbags are Hermes, Fendi, and Louis Vuitton.  Sigh.

Her armor is a white trimmed in black Chanel boucle jacket

crisp and clean before the financial ruin

remaining like an old friend throughout,

becoming a little less runway worthy as time marches on…

Her shield is a rich caramel colored Hermes Birkin bag,

she wields it through the streets,

to the dentist’s office where she takes work as a receptionist,

to the party where she meets her potential prince charming…

her feet are shod in custom made Roger Vivier shoes for the trip from financial breakdown to nervous breakdown…

On the trip from wealth to ruin Jasmine remains haughty and yet to watch the decline is heartbreaking.

I give it two thumbs up…
