Surprise, The Spider Lilies Are Blooming

I headed out this morning with Cammie and Maggie for a morning walk and surprise, the spider lilies are blooming everywhere…

Truly one of the pass-along plants, the bulbs are often spotted in old gardens and cemeteries.  Let a good rain shower come along in late September and the spider lilies begin their show.  My grandmother always called them surprise lilies.  They are usually a surprise for they emerge quickly from the bare ground on narrow green stems and unfurl themselves seemingly overnight. I have also heard them called “British soldiers” and “Guernsey lilies”.  Their botanical name is Lycoris radiata.

Whatever they are called, I love them…

Hmm, another friend says that they are later here than she remembers. Maybe the weather has something to do with it? I loved your Dior photos pgt!

I have always heard them called “naked ladies”. I suppose this is due to the lack of foliage . They are delightful!
