A Flowery Owl For Bid Day

Last week college age daughter called with the request –

could you make the flowery owl for bid day?

The flowery owl (the owl is their mascot) had first been created by a friend whose daughter was a few years ahead of mine in her college career.

For a couple of years I helped her with the creation

and then the task fell to me upon her daughter’s graduation.

Remember me heading out to the wholesale florist a few days ago searching for all the white flowers I could find?

Now you know the reason!

The beginning of the creative process,

as many white flowers as could be found…

I liked the green and had an idea for the face this time around…

I usually like to use white carnations since that is their flower but there was not a single one anywhere in Jackson!

Using the daisies gave her a kind of polka dot effect, but what was a girl to do?

Not only were there no carnations, I had to search far and near for two contrasting daisies for her eyes.  This would be why I ended up with the

amazing fall flower arrangement, just to get two eye-wothy daisies!

hydrangea, sunflower

I began by soaking the oasis for a couple of days and then assembling the Body.

At this point she looked like a space alien but things improved…

I added in a little extra oasis to form the beak…

and then the fun began…

when I spotted the little green mums, I had an idea for a little bit of a contrasting mask for this years’ beauty…

Let me tell you, I would normally be putting her together in Oxford, making the transport much easier, but circumstances this year had me creating at home and then driving her up.  Mr. Doctor took her to the car and believe me he has a new respect for the process now!  He couldn’t believe how heavy she was (don’t call her heavy to her face, she is sensitive like that).  At any rate, we both arrived safely and daughter met us to assist withthe set up –

up the stairs and through the front door into the foyer…

I added the crimson bow to help her not be flat chested fill her out a bit.

I think she enjoys all the attention…

who knows what she will turn out like next year?…
