Welty On Wednesday: A Christmas Open House

I enjoyed attending a Christmas Open House at the Eudora Welty House and Garden Museum this week.

You can tell that you have arrived at the right spot when the resident kitty is there to greet…

Volunteers made over a dozen cakes from Miss Welty’s White Fruitcake recipe and there was hot cider to accompany the cakes…

In the Visitor’s Center we enjoyed classical and jazz music played on guitar and cello…

and were able to view a high resolution digital copy of Diarmuid Russell’s January 3, 1963 letter to Eudora thanking her for the annual white fruitcake she sent to his family…

The first floor of the house was open and we were able to see about a dozen holiday greeting cards sent to Miss Welty over the years.  They included cards from Katherine Anne Porter, Charlotte Capers, Mary Louise Aswell, President and Mrs. Clinton and some from local friends as well.  A rarely seen hand painted greeting from Agnes Sims was on display and I regret not being able to show you a photo of this (you know about obeying the rules regarding flash photography around archival elements, and I am like that about following the rules!)  It was beautiful!

Current greetings of the season were on display in the Visitor’s Center…

The house is rarely lit up at night so it was a real treat to see with all the luminaries lining the walks…
