The L.L.Bean Store in Freeport Maine

One of the highlights of our visit to Maine was a trip to the L.L. Bean Store in Freeport…

L.L.Bean

The story of Leon Leonwood Bean, affectionately known as Lennie, is a compelling one.  He had barely achieved his 12th birthday when his father died – followed by his mother’s death 4 days later.  After this he went to live with his mother’s brother and here, at age 13, he went on his first hunting trip.  Following his cousin into the Wild River area of New Hampshire, he shot his first deer with a borrowed rifle  and became a true outdoorsman.

The creating of the L.L. Bean boot was the building block for success – the 100 percent guarantee was born.

After a day of hunting Bean returned with cold wet feet necessitating a solution.  He hired locals to cut and sew leather uppers and took galoshes off the store shelf, cut off the rubber bottoms and had a cobbler assemble the pieces.  All 100 pairs were sold from the first making but they were not waterproof – the rubber was not sturdy enough – and ninety pairs were returned.  The patrons were all reimbursed and work began to improve the product.

The Maine Hunting Shoe was here to stay…

The store is open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day,

there is really no need for a lock on these doors…

are worn out and customer still satisfied.”
