The Art Of Topiary

I am fascinated with the art of topiary – growing dense plants and pruning them to create three dimensional living sculpture is indeed an art form.

Harvey Ladew was a foxhunter and artist, a very colorful figure born in New York City who lived 90 richly creative years.  He bought Pleasant Valley Farm in rural Maryland in 1929.  At the time the garden consisted of a couple of lilac bushes.  Ladew created 22 acres of gardens and transformed Pleasant Valley Farm into “the most outstanding topiary garden in America”, according to the Garden Club of America…
