Flowering Trees

Maggie, Cammie and I took our daily walk around Belhaven today and especially enjoyed all the flowering trees in our neighbors gardens.  Several years ago we lost a really large Japanese Magnolia that was in our back yard and I still miss it today.

Magnolioa liliiflora is her scientific name and the show she puts on in late winter is spectacular.

Here is one neighbor’s specimen…

Being such an early bloomer we were always afraid of a frost ruining the show and in fact it did from time to time.

I caught this one just as it is about to open…

…warmed my heart……LOVE the bud…..she looks like her name would be “Ophelia”…..I wish NOT the same fate for her as Shakespeare’s famous “O’……..

Ophelia it is! I always seem to love the bud as much as the opened flower. Perhaps it is the promise of beauty, I don’t know!
