Preserving Place

On a recent trip to Atlanta I accidentally discovered Preserving Place.  My friend and I headed out to the Westside Provisions District one afternoon for a bit of retail therapy and as we were walking by a cute storefront the owner stepped outside and invited us in.  The shops moniker was catchy, and curiosity led to our entry, which yielded a most pleasant visit with Martha McMillin, founder and canning expert…

Preserving, canning, cooking

Martha told us about leaving her law job to pursue a passion fueled by fond memories of growing up on a farm and the methods of preserving foods that she learned from her mother and grandmother.  She hails from Spartanburg, South Carolina and opened Preserving Place to both honor her family heritage and support local farmers.

One of the first things to catch our eye was her recent batch of preserved meyer lemons…

She had a few recipes which she was happy to share and so we both left with a jar of preserved lemons…

I love her attention to detail, pretty blue tags tied on with colorful string…

the cotton boll figures prominently in all of her marketing, a nod to her heritage…

I decided to give the chicken recipe a try….

It was a success even though I had bone in chicken and it called for boneless.  I think the flavors might have blended a little better with the chicken sitting flat in the pan along with all the other ingredients.

Have you cooked with preserved meyer lemons?

Let me know if you have any insight…
