Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Happy St. Patrick’s Day…

St. Patrick's Day

The celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in Jackson has already taken place with the ever-popular Mal’s St. Paddy’s Day Parade on Saturday.  Thankfully for the parade goers the rain held off and the parade went on!

The tradition of honoring St. Patrick on March 17th (the date of his death) comes from Ireland but the tradition of celebrating with a parade is actually American!  The parade was invented in Manhattan!  The people of Ireland treated the day as a solemn religious even – they might wear green or pin on a shamrock and attend mass but there was no parade.

My friend Charlie Hall and friends won the float competition at the Jackson parade this year…

 That is some float!

No one knows when the first St. Patrick’s Day celebration in America took place.  The Charitable Irish Society was founded in Boston on St. Patrick’s Day 1737.  Another early celebration in New York City in 1762 occurred when an Irishman, John Marshall, entertained at his home.  Not much is known about the party but apparently his guests marching to his house formed an unofficial parade.  The first true parade took place in 1766 in New York  and with very few exceptions has been held every year since.  Ireland has adopted the American tradition!

So even though we have already paraded, Happy St. Patrick’s Day from all of us over here On Pinehurst Place…
