May Day Baskets

The tradition of handing out May Day Baskets is so charming and one that I wish were more prevalent.  When my children were in elementary school our tradition was for fourth grade “graduates” (they were moving to middle school) to wrap the maypole while the other grades participated by performing class dances.  In those days I enjoyed making decorations for the picnic that always followed the Maypole dance and even made a miniature Maypole that I carted around for years!

I am bringing the tradition around to all of you with some pretty May Day Baskets here OPP.

looks like it was made with flowers just cut from the garden…

Traditionally, May Day celebrations began early in the morning as people would go out before the sun rose to gather the flowers and greenery they would use for decorating.  Baskets were then hung on neighbors doors or gates in the belief that the vegetative spirits would bring good fortune.
