Memorial Day

Begun in 1862 as Decoration Day…

Decoration Day

The origin of the tradition is not clear – many communities held celebrations to honor fallen soldiers – but in 1966 Waterloo, NY, was named by the government as the official birthplace of Memorial Day.  The town held its first celebration on May 5, 1866 and thereafter held an annual event with businesses closing and town residents decorating graves with flags and flowers.  May 30th was eventually chosen as the official date for Decoration Day because it was not the anniversary for any particular battle.

Originally honoring only Civil War dead, the holiday evolved during World War I and became an event to honor all military personal whose lives were lost in all wars.  In 1968 Congress changed the official date to the last Monday in May thus creating a three-day weekend and declaring Memorial Day a federal holiday.

The unofficial beginning of summer, Memorial Day is a time to reflect and honor those whose lives were lost to ensure our freedom.

I meandered around and took a few photos downtown and in Belhaven where flags are proudly flying.
