Across The Garden Gate With Adrienne Moncrief Hemphill

I recently had a  chat across the garden gate here OPP with friend, neighbor and businesswoman, Adrienne Moncrief Hemphill.  Let me tell you, this lady is one go-getter!  Her story is fascinating and as she tells it we laugh a lot and get a little sentimental as well.  I first met Adrienne when she was living On Pinehurst Place and had an exercise studio in her back yard where she taught a combination aerobics/yoga class that I adored.  Well that has been about twenty years ago and there is a little water under the bridge now!

Adrienne married and moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast where she and her husband were victims of Hurricane Katrina’s massive destruction.  The Hemphills found themselves, as did many others, seeking refuge a bit father inland and thus she landed back in Jackson…

They have since rebuilt their coastal home but retain the Jackson house also – which is to the benefit of her many students and clients.

the Belhaven house lends itself to her pursuits so well…

her curlicue greeting lets you know that you are entering a gracious fun-filled space…

the front room of her home is dedicated to the yoga studio…

the room is cool and welcoming and offers views to two courtyards…

there are vibrant colorful touches everywhere

her sense of humor is evident…

I asked her how, in addition to teaching yoga,  she ended up becoming a fashion consultant and makeup artist.  She took me through the twists and turns of her delightful, if not always easy, road to the career she has chosen.

Her degree in Music (Vocal Performance) is very fitting to her theatrical personality…

Adrienne Moncrief

but she says it was a good thing she minored in Business as the music thing was not doing much in the way of paying the bills!  She started out in sales and public relations and found herself giving fashion and makeup advice to many of her coworkers.  The late seventies crazes “Dress For Success” and “Color Me Beautiful” spawned the career she is still so passionate about today.

Upon telling her boss that she was leaving her job in order to open a business she found herself gaining her first client and the rest is history!

In addition to teaching yoga, Adrienne has her own cosmetics line…

Wednesdays are sale days and she is available all day for purchases and small consultations.  Tuesday and Thursday are reserved for larger scale makeup and makeover appointments…

I took part in last week’s water class and thoroughly enjoyed it…

the pool is salt water – Adrienne explained the process to me briefly, and while there is chlorine involved you leave the water without a trace of a scent –

an outdoor shower is available if you happen to have correct change…

and I like everything about these admonishments…

the lady claims she is no gardener but I found evidence to the contrary…

her magnolia bloom was so perfect it almost did not look real…

Adrienne’s book, Mascara She Wrote, is a delightful homage to her work with makeup and fashion.  Topics range from “Skin So Smooth” to “Crowning Glory” to “I Feel Pretty.”  The illustrations, by Kat Fitzpatrick, add to the light-hearted feel of the book…

Adrienne Moncrief

I found myself drawn to this colorful rooster and after hearing his story it is no wonder…

Adrienne Moncrief

a gift from a friend, the music box rooster came from the friend’s mother’s collection

the little bird survived Hurricane Katrina intact – no longer musical, he is full of Katrina mud – but he is a survivor nonetheless

as is our heroine…
