Eden Plantation

 

On our way home from Rosemary Beach Sunday we took a little detour to see what was happening at Eden Plantation, a state park and historic memorial close to Santa Rosa Beach.

Several years ago when a group of friends built a house at Seaside, we got to know Richard Gibbs who was the Seaside town architect at the time.  As we went through the process of designing a house we built a friendship.  Years later he and his partner moved a little further inland and set about reclaiming the gardens at Eden Plantation…

Eden was build in 1895 and at some point the house had elaborate Victorian embellishment.  Bought in 1963 by Lois Genevieve Maxon, the house was restored and now is shown as it was built.  Legend has it that the owner modeled it after a plantation he saw on his way home from the Civil War…
