An Amazing Artist

Paul Smith was a very unlikely and amazing artist.  He suffered from cerebral palsy and so he had major loss of motor control of his hands and face.  The loss of control made it impossible for him to perform most of the basic functions of daily living as well as making self expression very difficult.

Well, he did not let the major difficulties brought on by his disease rule his life.  He persisted and found a most unique form of self expression through the use of a most unlikely artistic source – his typewriter!

He figured out how to use it to create pictures…

He used one hand to steady the other and was able to press on the key he needed to use…

From the age of 15 he was creating his typewriter art and continued to refine his technique for the remainder of his life.  As he got older he developed cataracts and the quality of his work declined until he decided to stop creating his art in 2004.

  1. What an inspiring story and a beautiful contribution to the world! With my husband’s own inability to control his hands, it is especially encouraging to see that the Lord can bring beauty and amazing work in ways we would not imagine. Thanks for sharing!
