December Flower of the Month: Camellia Sasanqua

December’s arrival brings with it the beautiful blooms of camellia sasanqua, especially welcome in the garden when most everything else is taking a winter nap.

The blooms range in color from bright red to pink to white but the foliage of this plant is as desirable as the bloom, dark green and glossy making a perfect backdrop for the showy flowers.

a favorite and seasonally appropriate, this one is yuletide…

the eye-catching post sits a little off kilter (thanks to our yahoo clay I am sure) but that is okay with me, it draws my eye to the border…

right around the corner, this shrub has grown as tall as the house…

they really do not require much care and are fairly disease free making a perfect addition to the garden…

This plant also has many practical qualities with the leaves used for tea making and the nuts for tea seed oil which is used for things like lighting and cooking.

You know I am partial to the plant since one of the flower girls shares its name!
