Marie Hull Society for the Arts

Belhaven University recently announced an exciting new project with the creation of the Marie Hull Society for the Arts.  The project will serve to support the four nationally-accredited Fine Arts programs offered at Belhaven and at the same time honor one of its most distinguished alumnae and one of Mississippi’s most respected artists.

Jack Kyle, Senior Director of Arts Development at Belhaven, called me a few months ago and I have been doing a bit of behind the scenes work to assist with promoting the Society.  His idea was to have several small gatherings with the purpose of introducing folks to Belhaven’s exciting new projects.

One such gathering occurred this week with a long time friend graciously agreeing to open her home.

I had told her to keep it simple, but she went all out…

this has nothing to do with the Society but I was drooling over her blue and white collection…

This society is first and foremost an organization created to increase the appreciation, knowledge, support, and enjoyment of the arts.  The Society also helps promote local, regional, national, and international appreciation of the art of Marie Hull. ~from Belhaven University’s brochure~

Marie Hull graduated from Belhaven (College) University in 1909.

A major cultural component of the Marie Hull Society will include a retrospective exhibition of her art scheduled for 2016 at the university and will be accompanied by a catalog.

In the photo above, the two paintings on either side are by Andrew Bucci.  The painting on the right side of the picture has been donated by Brown’s Fine Art and Framing and will be given away to one lucky patron when all of the small group receptions have been held.  All you need to do to be eligible to win is attend a gathering and fill out a card.  Let me know if you are interested and I will get your name on an invitation list!

As part of the project, the university also seeks to develop a permanent collection of Hull paintings, drawings and historic memorabilia, primarily through donations of her artworks.

This painting belongs to William Carey University…

I also have brochures with information about the Marie Hull Society and the benefits of membership.  Feel free to contact me and I will be happy to provide you with the brochure!

Have I stirred up your passion for the arts?…

I love Marie Hull! Also my former boss and good friend Lynett Robinson has more than one of her paintings…and has had them for a long time!! I would love to come and I can tell her about it if she hasn’t already come to a meeting.❤️

That is great news Kandy. I know that Jack would love to talk to her and I will definitely let you know about the future meetings so that you can attend (and hopefully win that Bucci piece!)
