Fraktur

I was reading the paper a few weeks ago and this caught my eye…

Fraktur

Fraktur…

A folk art form popular with Pennsylvania Germans during the 18th and 19th centuries.  The art form get its name from the script used, “fractured” pen strokes.

There is an exhibit currently at the Philadelphia Museum of Art encompassing 200 examples of Pennsylvania German Fraktur.

I would love to see the exhibit in person but for now am just scrolling through online images of the art form…

Fraktur

Fraktur was a form of expression that was tied to social and religious customs.  Most were created for births, baptisms, weddings, house blessings or awards of merit…

Fraktur

others illustrated biblical scenes and portraiture…

Fraktur

adorned with scrolling vines, flowers…

Fraktur

I love this unique colorful form of expression and its ties to the milestones of life!
