Mackworth Island was deeded to the state of Maine in 1943.  Former Governor Percival Baxter lived here and the island is now  home to the Baxter School for the Deaf.  Open to visitors, there is a path around the perimeter of the island that takes approximately an hour to walk at a leisurely pace.  The trail is easy to maneuver even when buried in snow…

When the island was deeded to the state of Maine it was under the stipulation that the Governor’s dog cemetery remain and be cared for.

his 13 Irish Setters and one horse are buried here…
