Knock Knock

Door knockers are one of those little details that catch my eye.

Witness some photographs I took while traveling around Italy last summer…

Here OPP we have a very intricate doorbell and when it works, the tune announcing a visitor is quite lovely.  But often enough it fails to chime leaving a visitor to wonder whether anyone is home.  So I have been thinking about door knockers and if a little detail like that would enhance the entrance.

The earliest designs were based on Greek statues that were created with somewhat grotesque features thought to ward off evil spirits and witches…

That’s not quite the look I would be going for.

I found several hand shaped knockers which I discovered were often seen in Muslim countries.  These were thought to be symbolic of the Hand of Fatima which protected the home from evil…

I also found reference to there being different shaped hand knockers for men and women which made different sounds when used.  This ensured that a woman would not accidentally open the door to a man…

suffice it to say that this would probably not have gone over well in those parts…

lions are quite popular…

and I like the way they look on the shiny black doors…

Maybe I could just have a bronze replica made of Cammie’s head!

  1. When I was a child if I came upon a house with a door knocker I thought that meant the people inside were quite wealthy…needless to say I always wanted a door knocker. I would have been happy with a simple door knocker, but have never had a knocker….the doors on our houses have never been knocker friendly…if we replace the front door someday perhaps a knocker will be in order.

What a cute childhood memory! I am thinking that the right knocker would definitely add to the welcome here OPP!

  2. My family had a brass knocker with our name engraved in it. What a nice memory……unfortunately I have no idea where that knocker is now!
