The Whim

Oatsie Charles’ grandfather was a Confederate commander in the Civil War and went on to serve seven terms in Congress.  She found herself ensconced in Washington, D.C. as a result of his political career which eventually led to his being elected Governor of Alabama.  A renowned Washington hostess and Newport society maven, Oatsie was a personal friend to nearly every President from John F. Kennedy onward.  She married Marshall Field department store heir Thomas Leiter and was in the center of the most influential of Americans.

Her Newport garden consists of many rooms, each with its own distinct personality…
