Blount Mansion

While I was in Knoxville this week one of the special places I got to visit was historic Blount Mansion…

Blount Mansion

The center section of the house was constructed in 1792 by William Blount…

His wife insisted on the “proper wooden frame house”, in other words, no log cabin for her!  The local Indian residents christened it “the house with many eyes”…

By 1925, the area around the Blount Mansion had been allowed to seriously deteriorate. Slums existed in the waterfront area. Blount Mansion was in seriously run-down condition…

Across the street from the Mansion site, the Andrew Johnson Hotel was under construction as part of a downtown revitalization. Efforts were underway to purchase the Blount Mansion property, and raze the only home of a signer of the U.S. Constitution outside of the 13 original states for hotel parking.

The property is indeed tucked in among the many modern structures in downtown Knoxville today…

there are some period antiques placed throughout the house…

  1. Beautiful. My favorite pic is the one with the house and the BB&T building in the background. Looks like a great tour. Enjoy your Thursday.
