On The Bookshelf Old and New

I love the “Elements of Style” feature in Veranda magazine and this month’s edition really caught my eye…

image

First of all, how perfect is her outfit?  Crop top and striped skirt by MDS Stripes – love!  I was in total agreement with her 12 favorite things and her number 5 pick had me heading to a bookcase to pull out my well worn copy of Derry Moore and Carl Skoggard’s book…

image

The survey of two dozen houses and apartments presents Moore’s photographs with Carl Skoggard’s prose and like Sarno it is a “book I turn to again and again.”

I’d be hard pressed to choose a favorite among the sites presented but Duchess de Mouchy’s home and garden would definitely be in the running…

image

It is titled “Her Last Lie Down” and Moore recants that she “died in the most wonderful way.  Came in from her flowers, went for a lie down, and was found dead two hours later.”  I’ll have that too please!

Also appearing is Lady Diana Cooper whose boudoir has always held a fascination for me…

image

Her bar setup is simple and appealing…

image

Elegant parlor…

image

She was “used to the limelight and had a reputation for naughtiness and bravado.  Many thought her the most beautiful Englishwoman of her day.”

image

And then there’s Chatsworth!  Deborah, wife of the Eleventh Duke of Devonshire and last of the six Mitford sisters, was proud to have completed the redecoration of the rooms herself…

image

The Duchess also proved to be a “formidable entrepreneur”, having developed Chatsworth Farms which now brings in substantial annual income…

image

Rudolf Nureyev wrapped in Caucasian kilims is photographed in his Paris apartment…

image

This is but the tip of the iceberg!  This book is full of inspiration in both photographs and stories.

Thanks Derry Moore…

And Carl Skoggard…

image

And now for a little something new!  A visit to the Kips Bay Showhouse is on my bucket list and every year I love looking at photographs taken by others lucky enough to view it in person.  I was so excited when I found this recent publication…

image

It contains designs by many of the iconic talents…

image

And like Rooms, is most likely a book I will turn to again and again…

image

While I had my nose in these two books somebody had her nose in the dirt burying bones…

What’s on your bookshelf?

  1. Duchess de Mouchy’s garden is lovely…topiaries are quite unique. I love going to a show house. Ours here in Baltimore was cancelled this year because they couldn’t find the right house. Hopefully next year it will be great since it skipped this year.

Oh too bad about the cancellation hopefully they will make it bigger and better with more time to plan. I was born in Baltimore but have not spent much time there and a Showhouse would be a great reason to visit!
