A Little More from LA LA Land

I really meant to show you some more highlights from my trip to LA back in the fall and somehow the Getty Center fell in the cracks.  I had the most pleasant day there and wanted to share some of it with you…

Originally the museum started in J. Paul Getty’s house in Pacific Palisades.  He actually expanded the house to incorporate a wing for the museum in the 1950s.  Later he built a replica of an Italian Villa for his collection and this opened in 1974.  Today the center is located in the Santa Monica Mountains and is surrounded by some 600 acres which are kept in their natural state.

I spent most of my time in the gardens…

My guide said that the original plan was for a fountain to grace the entrance to the museum.  When this plan changed these planters were construed and planted to resemble water flowing down the steps…

The structures are created with 30 inch squares of concrete and travertine…

image

Even the hedges and trees are trimmed to 30 or 60 inch heights and diameters…

image

Multiple foutains throughout the complex provide peaceful background noise…

These rebar topiaries were amazing…

The sunken garden…

Is surrounded by beautiful flower, fruit and vegetable gardens…

When you find yourself in LA LA Land be sure to included a visit to the Getty Center in your plans…

You won’t be sorry…
